I'm Hassan Mamdani. I live in Cambridge, UK.

My career has moved around more than most. I started in preclinical drug discovery — bench science, then project and programme management. From there I moved into IT systems implementation: LIMS, ELN, ERP, compound management. Then into operations and leadership. I'm currently COO and CFO of Opening Worlds Ltd, a small company that makes KS2 humanities curriculum for primary schools.

The common thread, if there is one, is that I tend to end up in roles where the job is to make complicated things work — across teams, systems, organisations. Not because I'm the deepest expert in any one domain, but because I can hold enough of several domains in my head at once to see where they connect and where they don't.

I've spent a long time treating that as a weakness. I'm writing through whether that's right.

I write here about being a generalist — the experience of breadth without obvious depth, and what it's actually like to build a career that way. No particular angle or agenda. Just things I'm thinking through.

I don't publish often. When I do, it's because I have something worth saying, not to fill a schedule.
